The Russian Manicure: Why Everyone Is Switching to This Flawless, Long-Lasting Finish

If you have ever admired a manicure where the polish seems to disappear right into the cuticle, with no gap, no ragged skin and no lifting after a week, you were probably looking at a Russian manicure. It is the technique behind the cleanest nails on social media, and it is quickly becoming the most requested service at Verdo Nails.

What is a Russian manicure?

A Russian manicure, also called a dry manicure or e-file manicure, is a precision cuticle treatment done with an electric file and fine diamond or ceramic bits instead of soaking, clippers and pushers.

Rather than softening the cuticle in water, your technician gently lifts and removes the dead skin and the thin, invisible layer of cuticle that sits on the nail plate. The result is a perfectly clean, exposed nail surface that polish or gel can bond to right up to the skin.

How it differs from a classic manicure

Cuticle prep. Classic: soak, push back and trim. Russian: dry, precision e-file removal.

Polish placement. Classic: a small gap at the cuticle. Russian: tucked flush under the cuticle.

Longevity. Classic: two to three weeks. Russian: three to four weeks.

Regrowth. Classic: visible within days. Russian: appears much later.

Lifting. Classic: common at the cuticle edge. Russian: minimal.

Because the gel sits under the cuticle, your nails look freshly done for far longer and the regrowth line is much less obvious.

What to expect at your appointment

A Russian manicure takes longer than a standard manicure because of the detail involved. Allow around 90 minutes to two hours with gel colour, or longer for builder gel or extensions.

1. Shaping. Your nails are shaped and the surface lightly buffed.

2. Cuticle work. Using an e-file with fine bits, your technician lifts the cuticle, removes the dead skin and cleans the sidewalls. This is slow, careful work, and it should never hurt.

3. Finishing the skin. The surrounding skin is smoothed so there are no hangnails or rough edges.

4. Colour. Gel is applied in thin layers and tucked under the lifted cuticle for that seamless finish.

5. Nourish. Cuticle oil to finish.

Is it safe?

Yes, when done by a trained technician. The e-file works on dead skin and the top layer of cuticle only. It should feel like a gentle vibration, never a burn or a sting. If you have ever had a rushed e-file service that left you red and sore, that is not a Russian manicure done correctly.

Our technicians are trained in the technique and use sanitised or single-use bits for every client. Please tell us if you have any nail or skin conditions, are diabetic, or have very thin or damaged nails so we can adapt the service.

Caring for your Russian manicure

- Apply cuticle oil daily to keep the skin soft and the gel edge sealed

- Wear gloves for washing up and cleaning

- Do not pick or peel the gel, book a removal or infill instead

- Rebook every three to four weeks to keep nails healthy and looking their best

Who is it for?

Anyone who wants a cleaner, longer-lasting manicure. It is especially good if your cuticles grow quickly, you hate the regrowth gap, you work with your hands, or you simply want nails that look salon-fresh for weeks.
